Eugene Onegin. Bolshoi Theatre. Press release.

Margarita Mamsirova is impressive as Olga, both dramatically and vocally.

Classicstoday.com, Robert Levine 2010

Margarita Mamsirova’s Olga Larina is a true discovery. Mamsirova destroys the character’s image of a “cheerful dummy”. Her Olga is an impressive personality, with no less power than Tatiana. Never before have we seen an Olga like this in an opera.

Olga, who is played with a flawless precision by Margarita Mamsirova, sings to Tatjana that she cannot “dream in silence”, and openly and sincerely throws down the gauntlet. Margarita Mamsirova enchants the audience with her velvety contrast.

Novaja Gazeta, 11th September 2006

The director has given Margarita Mamsirova, the only person to belong to both casts, a polemic role. The singer structures her scenes harmoniously and evokes a true feeling of indignation, which is seldom witnessed in modern operatic theatre. You see a jolly, risible girl (even if she may have a menacingly low voice): Olga radiates aggression, hardship and even a certain cruelty when she sings her first aria.

Peterburgskij Theatralnyj Journal, September 2006

In Olga’s aria “Ja nye sposobna k grusti tomnoy“ you can hear an old quarrel. It is a creed, a protest, a self-assertion, an imploring warning for Tatiana, verging on a hysterical attack. Olga, who is portrayed perfectly by Margarita Mamsirova, sings “Everyone calls me a child” with a desperate intensity, almost a suggestion. This is no endearing, innocent flirting, but a battle for the right to live differently. The relationships are pointed and almost hostile, with aggression an everyday occurrence.

Theatralnyj Westnik, April 2002

The new production of the opera Carmen, which is being performed in the Stanislavski and Nemirowitsch-Dantschenko concert hall, is a unique dramatic event. You cannot help but be amazed at how much passion is concealed in this beautiful little woman, the artistic talent with which she plays every scene, and how expressively she sings her arias.

You will both admire and hate Margarita Mamsirova’s Carmen, which represents a perfect mixture of the gorgeous and the evil.

Her Carmen thrills with her inexhaustible vitality and spontaneity. She is natural and liberal. The main impulse, which determines her entire life, is the assertion of her personal freedom, even if she must pay for it with her life. Margarita Mamsirova portrays this feeling of freedom in her singing, dancing and roaring laughter. Her portrayal is characterised by a unique romanticism and inner discretion. Mamsirova avoids contrived emotional effects and an exaggerated accentuation of external moments, meaning her Carmen does not come across as a cut and dried opera character, but displays a real national complexity.

The fortune-telling scene shocks the spectators: rather than a Carmen who is intoxicated by her own power, charm and glamour, we see a different, withdrawn and concentrated Carmen. The full sound of her voice’s lower register impressively displays a rich, fat timbre. Mamsirova’s representation of Carmen embodies the secretive inconceivability of a woman’s heart; its constant changes and adaptability, and its ability to ignite and extinguish. Mamsirova seems to sing all her arias in one breath.
